LJ is going to purge long-inactive communities; nobody's posted here in a while, but I'm not prepared to abandon this to the recycling software, so I'm posting this to make it count as active.

[That's old SunOS syntax, btw.)

When is a Big Family Too Big?

Read more...Collapse )

My answer:

Overpopulation is a big problem, and it's why I would like to be sterilized when time/money permit it. I love being an aunt. I love children. However, I know that the Gods did not intend me to be a parent. (I'm on medication that can cause birth defects).

The pro-breeding faction screams to the hills that those who decide against parenthood are "selfish." Yet, I typically see more thought and compassion going into the decision not to have children. People's reasoning to have children often include VERY selfish ideas like:

"I want someone to love ME unconditionally."
"I want someone to take care of ME when I'm old."
"I want to create something that's a part of ME and my partner."
"I want to carry on MY genes/family name."

Parenting is a big, important job. I admire my spirit-sister for raising a great kid on her own after her husband was killed by a drunk driver. I also admire her for opening her heart and home to many two and four legged strays over the years. However, there are very few maladies and sorrows facing humanity and the planet we live on that cannot be alleviated by reducing our fertility rate. The greatest negative would be having to address the Ponzi scheme keeping Social Security propped up.

Thank you to whoever started this community!

My husband (30) and I (29) are starting to think childfree is best because of us both having health issues. I have a sister (40 in September!) and brother (37); my husband has a brother (24 in July), but only my sister has children at this point. We also spoil cousins and friends' kids.

My sister has two children. Henry will be 12 in September and Olivia (Livi) turned 7 in March. They've had a tough past couple years, as my sister and their father separated and then divorced after 18 years of marriage. My sister has been dating someone with a daughter Henry's age for awhile, but isn't ready to get married again (she was 19 when she got married), something Henry can't comprehend. Also, I live in Colorado and they live in Wisconsin, so I don't get to see them as often as I'd like.

Henry is on a travelling soccer team this spring, which has been very exciting.

About one month ago, I have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. In those circumstances, even though I'm on medication and on a waiting list for a therapy (slow canadian public health system), now I know for sure I don't want children, I don't want them to have a mentally ill mother. So I want to be a terrific aunt for Pascal and Felix. On the other hand, my nephews are not really mine, they are my boyfriend's, so I don't want to get too involved, because if my relationship ends, then I wouldn't see them anymore. Anyone else in a similar situation ('inherited' nephews and nieces) ?

Hi. I'm a 39 year old woman who lives in the freezing north of Ohio. The entire state it seems, has recently relocated to Alaska. The three things that keep me here are my two nieces and my nephew. God they're wonderfully cute, and loving, and smart.

I've never really wanted kids. When I was younger it was always "Well maybe in a few years". But now, nah. I tell people my biological clock had an everlasting snooze button.

But being their aunt? It rocks. I'm really glad to have found this community. See what insomnia gets you?
